Dear Sir or Madam,

I saw your advertisement for the International Youth Conference Debate on global warming in The International Student and I am writing for more information. I am a member of the school Debating Club and we are all keen to take part in the event, but require further details.

First of all, could you tell us whether there is an age limit for the participants? Our team consists of seven students aged between fourteen and eighteen. We would like to know if it is possible for all of us to participate and whether we have to be accompanied by a teacher.

We would be grateful if you could inform us about the deadline for the application as well as the exact dates of the debate so that we can make the necessary travel arrangements. Could you please send us an information pack, including application forms and any other useful information about the Conference?

Finally, we would appreciate any information concerning accommodation in the area where the competition is going to take place.

I look forward to receiving your answer.

Yours faithfully,

Alexander Shuvalov

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to ask for more information in connection with your ‘Call for Volunteers’ to help Greenpeace. I am not a member of Greenpeace but I would like to know more about how I can help.

I would be grateful if you could tell me what kind of work is involved and whether I would need any special qualifications. I am sixteen years old and I live in Moscow. I do not have much experience of environmental work but I help to clean up our local park every year.

I would also like to know where the work will take place. I would like to work in my own area if possible. I believe there are a lot of ecological problems in my city.

Finally, could you tell me when the work would be as I would prefer summer work? I go to school but I have a lot of free time in the holidays. If there is anything else I need to know, please let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing with regard to your advertisement which I saw in ‘The St. Petersburg Times’ yesterday. We are organising a party to celebrate the engagement and we need more information.

First of all, I would like to know whether it is possible to book a private function room for Saturday, September 30 th from 20.30 till 24.00. We are planning to invite about 60 guests so I wonder if your room is big enough for our party. Another thing which is not clear in the advert is whether you have a special dance area and a music system. We are all keen on dancing so these facilities are very important for us.

We would also like to order your catering and want to know what kind of food you provide. I would appreciate if you could inform us about the menu in advance. We would prefer buffet if it is possible.

Finally, could you tell us how much the cost per person will be and when the deadline for the reservation is. We would be grateful if you could send us a reservation form.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Vladimir Veselov

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to you about a Life Core Fitness 900UB Upright Bike which I bought from US Fitness Products (Moscow) on 20th November for $800. I enclose copies of the guarantee and receipt.

To begin with, this bike is extremely badly made. The speedometer stopped working after a week. Besides, the heart rate control system must also have broken since its readings were not correct. Finally, the pedals broke just as I was cycling at full speed.

Moreover, in your advertisement you claim that people will lose at least a kilo a week by using this bike for only half an hour every day. However, I have been using it for a month but seem to have lost no weight at all.

When I took the exercise bike back to the shop, not only did the manager refuse to refund my money, but said that he would not repair the bike either.

I would like you to refund my money as soon as possible. Unless I get full satisfaction within the next three weeks, I will have to take legal action.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Sergei Bobrov

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing in response to an article I saw in your newspaper on 20th April. In that article, the local businessman, Mr Peter Shirokov, was interviewed. He made a number of statements which I would like to disagree with.

First of all, it is not true that the local park is any cleaner now than it was before. A few days ago my family and I were walking in the park and saw there was still lots of litter there.

In addition to that, the local council have not done all the work they promised to do to improve sports facilities. Contrary to what Mr Shirokov claims, the basketball court hasn’t been finished yet. Moreover, they promised to build a new swimming pool but didn’t do it.

Finally, I would like to point out that the local council have not worked very closely with local people to plan for the future because as far as I know they only organised one meeting.

Could I suggest that you interview local people to discover the truth about all the problems in our area?

Yours faithfully,

Alexander Krasilov
